Building Assessment for HVAC Upgrades & Platforms

Upgrading air conditioning or mechanical plant on an existing building often means additional loads on the roof or supporting structure new condenser units, plant platforms, screening and support steel work all need to be checked by a structural engineer before installation goes ahead. Elevate Engineering Consultants provides structural assessment and certification for HVAC upgrades, rooftop plant and platforms, confirming the building can safely support the new equipment.

What We Assess

  • Structural capacity of the existing roof, roof framing or building structure to carry additional HVAC or plant loads.
  • Suitability of proposed condenser platforms, plant support frames and screening structures.
  • Wind loading on rooftop plant and platforms in accordance with AS/NZS 1170.2.
  • Load paths from new plant through to existing purlins, rafters, trusses, columns or footings.
  • Additional point loads and how they're distributed across the existing structure.
  • Vibration and dynamic loading from mechanical plant, where relevant.
  • Structural adequacy of access walkways and maintenance platforms.
  • Fixing and connection details for platforms, brackets and support steel.

When Is Engineering Required?

Mechanical contractors, Registered Certifiers and building owners will often ask for confirmation that the existing structure can support new HVAC equipment before installation proceeds particularly on commercial, industrial and multi residential buildings, or wherever the new plant adds meaningfully to the loads the roof was originally designed for. This is commonly required when:

  • Adding new condenser units, chillers, package units or plant to an existing roof.
  • Upgrading or replacing existing air conditioning with heavier or larger equipment.
  • Installing new rooftop platforms, walkways or plant screens.
  • A Registered Certifier or Council requires structural certification as a condition of approval.
  • The mechanical contractor needs written confirmation the roof or platform can support the specified plant before they'll proceed with installation.

Structural Solutions

Where the existing structure isn't adequate for the proposed plant, our engineers can design a suitable solution, which may include:

  • Strengthening of existing roof framing, purlins or rafters.
  • New steel support frames or platforms built independently of the existing roof structure.
  • Load spreading beams or bracket systems to distribute plant loads across more of the structure.
  • Additional bracing or connections to resist wind uplift on rooftop plant and platforms.

Engineering Report & Certification

Following our assessment, Elevate Engineering Consultants can prepare a Structural Assessment Report or Statement of Structural Adequacy for submission to the Registered Certifier, Council, building manager or mechanical contractor. This can include details of the proposed plant and loads, a review of the existing structure, any strengthening or platform design required, and engineering certification confirming the works are structurally sound.
